The history of this lottery began on the 31st of August in 1996. Back then it was called the Big Game and only had six states that participated in it. The six states were Maryland, Georgia, Massachusetts, Illinois, Michigan, and Virginia. A draw on Tuesday was added in February of 1998 after the lotto garnered excitement. Early in 1999, those who played this lottery were given a larger amount of numbers to choose from and the ability to take their payment in cash. In May of 2002, New Jersey became a member of this lottery. Three years after that, was name change to Mega Million. That same year Ohio and New York joined and the lottery was changed a bit to make it more exciting. In June of 2005, California joined to make this lottery the most popular in the United States. Today, this lottery is played in a total of 42 states and 44 juristictions, including the U.S. Virgin Islands and D.C.

The Biggest Winners Of Mega Millions

The ten largest winnings range from $270 million to $656 million. On February 28, 2006, someone from Ohio won a grand total of $270 million with the winning numbers of 2, 4, 35, 36, 48, and 22.

The ninth biggest winner won a total of $275 million on February 22, 2008. This time though the winner was from Georgia and the winning numbers were 7, 12, 13, 19, 22, and 10.

The eighth biggest winner won $294 million in Massachusetts nearly a decade on the second of July in 2004. For this jackpot, the winning numbers were 10, 25, 38, 39, 50, and 12.

In November 15th, 2005, someone from California was the winner of a total of $315 million.

The sixth largest winner of this lottery was a person from New York who had won $319 million on the 25th of March in 2011.

On August 31st of 2007, four people from Maryland, New Jersey, Virginia, and Texas each won the jackpot, four of them split the $330 million.

Two people won $336 million on the 28th of August in 2009. One of them was from California while the other was from New York.

Early in January of 2011 two people won the mega lottery of $380 million; one of them being from Idaho and the other from Washington.

The second largest amount ever won from the Mega Millions lottery was $390 million. It was won by two people from Georgia and New Jersey. This lottery was played on the 6th of March in 2007.

The largest jackpot ever won was a whopping $656 million on the 30th of March in 2012. Three lucky people won this lottery, one being from Maryland, one from Kansas, and the last from Illinois.
